John has been creating his sonic world since the late ‘80s, starting out on the guitar from the age of 8.
Soon after he started writing songs for his funk and alternative bands, playing multiple instruments including guitar, bass, drums and vocals.
His recording career didn’t begin in earnest until 2003. He has always preferred making his own songs over covering songs.
In 2006 John accomplished a degree in Audio Engineering from SAE Amsterdam, helping him to materialize his ideas and achieve his own sound.
John is most intrigued by the more 'deep' and meaningful tracks, preferring a short heartfelt moment over endless melancholy. His acoustic songs are timeless - you feel like they’ve always been around - yet there’s freshness to John’s music that makes repeated listening an endlessly inspiring experience.
John also works with his younger sister, vocalist Gia Mellish. John and Gia were born in The Hague, The Netherlands. While they were growing up the kitchen was their home studio, and was well equipped with drums, a piano and a guitar. There was always music in the house. After High School they both knew they had to make music a career choice, though eventually they chose different music schools, Gia went to the Rock Academy and John to the SAE.
Gia took the artist name 'Gia Mellish' and as an singer/songwriter has released many house records on labels such as Ministry of Sound, Hed Kandi, and with many producers including Sébastien Léger and Alan Braxe. She has performed in clubs all over the world.
John started producing pop tracks and always kept his guitar as the main element in his music. John produces in a style that is all his own, an eclectic mix of flamboyant pop with heavily filtered acoustic beats and endless dreamy guitars.
Gia moved to London in 2009 to work with different producers and started a DJ career, singing and DJ-ing simultaneously, which added an extra dimension to her music repertoire. Still, she missed an authentic aspect in her music, and so finally after years of writing and working with producers, John and Georgina combined forces to get back to the songwriting they enjoyed so much when they were young. But now adding electronic beats and sounds to their music.
They choose the name DROOOM which comes from the Dutch word DROOM, meaning dream.
DROOOM is about two free-spirited musicians. They write music without restriction or following any rules, giving their imaginations full rein. Their music can best be described as an eclectic mix of flamboyant pop with heavily filtered acoustic beats, coupled with guitars, and endless fantasy.
